History

Limoges porcelain is produced in Limoges, a city in France.  It is hard paste porcelain and is used for many products. The manufacturing process started in Limoges in the late 1700’s. Limoges does not refer to a particular manufacturer rather than the city in France where the first factories originated.

Since the 1730’s, the city of Limoges was involved in producing tin glazed pottery. After the discovery of kaolin, a clay silicate mineral, and petunse, the manufacturing of hard paste porcelain was established in 1771 in Limoges. These two minerals are essential elements required in the production of porcelain boxes. The first manufacturing was placed under the support of the brother of King Louis XVI and was later purchased by the king himself in 1784.

French Limoges porcelain hinged boxes appeared in the early 19th century and soon became a notable collectable item amongst some of the most discerning jewelry collectors of the time. People would often buy the Limoges hinged boxes to safe keep precious items such as gold, rings, diamonds, love letters and other valuable items.

The methods and procedures involved in making French Limoges porcelain boxes are the same today as were during the 1770’s. This way it is ensured that the quality of the Limoges boxes is maintained. The French Limoges Boxes are collectibles of the highest degree and therefore it is better to ensure that they are made from the original historical procedures and craftsmanship.

Throughout the 18th century and into the 19th century, the Limoges porcelain boxes gained much popularity. The artists and manufacturers put much thought and efforts into the designing and decoration of Limoges porcelain boxes. Each French Limoges porcelain box was hand painted and decorated with details suiting different needs. At that time, people used to gift these boxes on various occasions and the manufacturers produced the Limoges porcelain boxes with various themes. They were usually gifted on weddings, birthdays, Christmas and other special occasions. The French have always been admired for their love and a French Limoges porcelain box was used as a gift on Valentines Day or as an engagement ring box to celebrate the love.
