How Limoges Boxes and Figurines are manufactured

Several different manufacturers in the region of Limoges, France make these Limoges Boxes and Figurines. These boxes and figurines have been made since the last two centuries and even today, the same traditional format of making them is used. The kaolin deposits that are found in this region is the ideal fine and white clay that is used to make Limoges Boxes and Figurines. The raw material that is used is a plastic kind of mixture that can be shaped or poured in to moulds to get the basic Limoges Boxes and Figurines. This is then further molded to a desired shape. After this, the final changes are added to it. Then, the shaped material is heated in a kiln to a really high temperature. This hardens and forms a sturdy and durable kind of porcelain. In this firing process, the object shrinks about fifteen percent. This is one major reason why every piece will have a slight variation in shape and size. Once this has cooled then it is hand painted by the artists using their imagination and creativity by the use of different colors and themes.

During this coloring process, one color is used at a time. The important thing is that the object goes through the firing process after receiving every single coat of paint. Once done, the next step is to hinge the porcelain boxes. Again, this hinging process is something that only an expert can perform.  These experts are there in Limoges and that’s why these boxes and figurines are of outstanding quality.

It is worth mentioning that though Limoges, France is the most popular place for the production of these boxes, but these boxes were there even during the 1520. Today, Limoges has become a major contributor to this industry, which is mainly due to the discovery of a large deposit of the most refined Kaolin. The presence of abundant forests is another reason why these porcelain boxes are manufactured on a large scale in this part of the world. These forests provide wood for the firing kilns and artists use their skills to create some wonderful pieces of art.

The crux of the matter is that manufacturing process of these products is quite complicated. However, there are three basic ingredients used for the manufacturing of these figurines and boxes. Feldspar is the first ingredient that is essential for translucency. Quartz is another important element used in the manufacturing process, mainly for durability and hardness. And of course, Kaolin, which is the white clay used in the making of Limoges porcelain. The combination of these ingredients and the commitment on part of these artists produces some astounding figurines and boxes for your enjoyment.
